Africa Truck business in the future
The African truck market is currently in a phase of rapid development, with a promising future ahead. With the advancement of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), trade barriers within the region are gradually diminishing, leading to a significant increase in road freight demand. The World Economic Forum predicts that the implementation of AfCFTA will generate an annual demand for nearly 2 million trucks, providing a substantial opportunity for truck manufacturers to expand their businesses.
South Africa, as the largest truck assembly country in Africa, produced over 24,000 trucks in 2022, marking a 15% year-on-year increase, and ranking among the top 20 global heavy and medium commercial vehicle assembly countries. However, over the next decade, South Africa's leading position may face challenges. As other African countries actively develop their local automotive assembly industries, South Africa needs to address internal structural issues to maintain its competitive edge.
FAW Jiefang has performed exceptionally well in the South African market. In 2024, FAW Jiefang's terminal sales in South Africa surpassed 5,000 units for the first time, a 31.9% increase year-on-year, capturing an 18% market share and securing the top position. Since entering the South African market in 1994, FAW Jiefang has deeply rooted itself locally, establishing a comprehensive production, sales, and service system, with products covering South Africa and surrounding countries.
Other African countries are also actively developing their local truck assembly industries. For instance, the Kenyan government approved regulations in 2022 to restrict the import of used trucks, aiming to increase the annual production of locally assembled trucks from the current 4,000 to 5,000 units to over 10,000 units. This initiative is intended to meet domestic demand and export to other countries within the free trade area.
